Science Workshop for Parents

2016

On the 8th of March (Saturday), the Science department conducted a 2 hours Parent’s Workshop, “Be your child’s coach”, in school. The aim of this workshop was to equip parents with the skills and confidence in supporting their child’s learning of the Science subject. The workshop which spans across two sessions had an approximated 80 parents attending.

The workshop covered areas such as the syllabus content for each level, assessments for the year and process skills that are essential in the understanding of science. Teachers in the department also shared on strategies to help parents guide their child in the answering of Science questions. Parents were brought through the scaffolding process of eliciting responses from the child when solving a problem. After which, the parents were given the opportunity to have a hands on experience to solve questions using the strategies shared.

The workshop also emphasises on the need for parents to play an active role in inculcating the interest of Science in their child. The use of daily life application to trigger their child’s thinking and encouragement to observe and ask are some practical ways to bring about the learning of Science at home.

The workshop was very well-received by the parents who attended and the department received positive and encouraging feedback.
