GP-AP Project (2014-2015)

Use of C-E-R (Claim-Evidence-Reason) in Teaching of Science

At the end of 2013, Gongshang Primary School was approached by ETD, MOE to participate in the GP-AP (Good Practice-Adopting Practice) Learning Programme, a programme to support schools to adapt good practices of former BackpackLIVE! schools.

Together with 2 other primary schools, GSPS formed a community of learning and explored how science teachers can help students explain scientific phenomenon using the Claim-Evidence-Reasoning (C-E-R) approach. Science teachers leverage the use of an ICT mindtool (Popplet) in this approach to develop students’ scientific explanation. In this approach, students make a claim and gather appropriate evidence to support it. They then articulate the scientific principles that connect the claim and evidence.

This study shows that students have improved the completeness of their scientific explanation by implementing the ICT-enabled C-E-R approach.
